An Evening with Rick Springfield at Hemmens
December 04 2009 - December 04 2009
Hemmens - Elgin

There's something about Rick Springfield that is, and always has been, very real.  His songs about love and loss, greed and envy, elation and heartbreak speak to that part of human nature that hasn't changed in 3,000 years.  His most recent studio release, "Venus in Overdrive" (New Door Records/UMe) was released July 29th, 2008, to high acclaim.  A creative collaboration between Rick and his longtime bass player, Matt Bissonette, "Venus in Overdrive" is simultaneously classic and current -- and definitely the music fans have loved since Rick's distinctive canine companion, Lethal Ron, first graced the cover of his classic album, "Working Class Dog."  To date, Rick Springfield has sold over 19 million records with a whopping 17 Top 40 hits.  He has performed for millions of devoted fans over the last three decades and continues to play over 100 shows a year.  Springfield never stops attracting new fans wherever he goes, with his unique brand of audience interaction, unstoppable energy, and unforgettable songs that have become part of the soundtrack to people's lives.

In 1981, Springfield recorded what would become the quintessential pop/rock album, "Working Class Dog," skyrocketing to the top of Billboard's charts with "Jesse's Girl" and "I've Done Everything for You."  The following year, he won a Grammy for "Best Male Rock Vocal Performance."  In May of 2009, Rick headed in a different direction by releasing a special album, "My Precious Little One" (Gomer Records/DKE Records).  This album is the collection of lullabies Rick created for his own family.

It's a Wonderful Life at The Hemmens
December 05 2009 - December 05 2009 | 3:00 & 7:00 p.m.
Hemmens - Elgin

Who doesn't know the story -- George Bailey's conflict between wanting to escape his hometown and wanting to stick it out and do right by his family.  Then he meets an angel named Clarence who gives him the rather gruesome gift of witnessing the world as if George Bailey had never been born.  In this unique "live broadcast" adaptation by Joe Landry, the ON AIR sign lights up and you're in the studios of WBFR Radio on Christmas Eve, 1946.  "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" invites you to experience Frank Capra's beloved story in a refreshingly new and intimate way.  More than 30 characters and numerous locations of the classic movie spring to life, in a beautifully detailed replicated experience that recalls a mainstay of our cultural experience in years past -- the live radio drama.  While it's become almost a virtually extinct formula (a small group of talented actors + live sound effects + the listener's vivid imagination) this re-imagined production by NC Stage Company and Immediate Theatre Project easily shows that it's an art worth preserving.  This creative retelling of the uplifting story of George Bailey, Clarence Oddbody (Angel, Second Class), and the many citizens of Bedford Falls becomes a perfect antidote to today's commercialized, stress-fueled holiday season.  Between the two shows, Santa will be arriving in Downtown Elgin at 5:00 p.m. for the annual tree-lighting ceremony, so either come early or stay late and enjoy the additional holiday festivities in downtown Elgin!

An Evening with the Oak Ridge Boys @ Hemmens
December 19 2009 - December 19 2009
Hemmens - Elgin

With their latest album, the evergreen Oak Ridge boys prove that they are not only enduring, they are evolving.  During their career, the Oak Ridge Boys have lent their distinctive harmonies to recordings of a diverse list of artists that includes Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Brenda Lee, Roy Rogers, and George Jones.  This quartet came together back in 1973 as a Gospel group lauded as one of the industry's premiere artists.  The Oak Ridge Boys outraged purists when they grew their hair long and stopped wearing matching suits.  Then they reinvented themselves as country stars with 1977's "Y'all Come Back Saloon."  In 2000, the Oaks were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.  The following year, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.  Since signing with Spring Hill, their recordings have earned three Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association.  While recording "The Boys are Back" last year, the Oak Ridge Boys were presented with the Academy of Country Music's top honor, its Pioneer Award.  In recent years, the Oak Ridge Boys have taken their show in another direction.  Their newest album, "The Boys are Back," is a roots-music revelation wherein the veteran quartet explores blues, country, Gospel, and rock textures.

David Cassidy at The Hemmens
February 13 2010 - February 13 2010
Hemmens - Elgin

When ABC-TV cast David Cassidy as its star in "The Partridge Family" in 1970, it launched one of the most astonishing careers in entertainment history.  Before the series had even aired, Cassidy was already on the cover of teen magazines throughout the world and had a #1 single, "I Think I Love You," which would become the best-selling record of 1970.  And that was just the beginning.  Pop and rock tunes followed, and  by the age of 21, Cassidy was the world's highest paid solo live performer.  In the course of five whirlwind years, he was nominated for a Grammy, performed sold-out concerts in the largest stadiums and arenas all across the globe, and his fan club grew to become the biggest in history, exceeding Elvis and The Beatles.  His career album sales -- highlighted by eighteen gold and platinum recordings, including four consecutive multi-platinum releases -- exceeded a whopping 2.5 million units worldwide.  In 1973, he willed the Wembley in London six times in three days, a record that not even The Rolling Stones has been able to beat.  David Cassidy is one of the few artists who has had hits in the charts in all the decades since the 70s.  Today, you will even find the children of his devoted fans of the 70s among the crowds.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers at The Hemmens
April 25 2010 - April 25 2010
Hemmens - Elgin

The Flying Karamazov Brothers, named after the novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, are a continuing experiment in comedy, theatre, music, and, of course, juggling.  With the intention of blending the worlds of performance art, improvisation, wordplay, harmony, emotion, and above all, virtuosity into a unique form of theatre and entertainment, the Flying Karamazov Brothers continue to find new ways to astonish by air, by laughs, and by scene.  Taking their cue from Shakespeare, they bring art and accessible entertainment to the stage.  Comedy is their bread and butter and they layer it on so that children of 2 or 92 will laugh at the same moment for very different reasons.   Among their many accomplishments, the Flying Karamazov Brothers have won an Obie Award, and were America's representatives of classical theatre at the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles.  In 2004, the Flying Karamazov Brothers were honored with an award of excellence by the International Juggling Association.

Will Rogers: An American Original
March 31 2010 - May 02 2010 | Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays
First Folio Theatre

The indoor portion of the Season of Invention at First Folio Theatre finishes with the world premier of "Will Rogers: An American Original," written and performed by 3-time Jeff nominee Kevin McKillip.  This one-man show explores the life and times of America's most popular humorist.  At the time of his death in 1935, Will Rogers hosted the number-one radio show in America, had a daily column that ran in over 400 papers, and was the number-one male box office star for three years running.  In the course of a career that included both Cactus Jack's Wild West Show and the Ziegfeld Follies, Will Rogers invented the American stand-up comic.  Using his trick roping skills to punctuate his delivery, Will Rogers' folksy humor set the groundwork for everyone from Bob Hope to Johnny Carson to David Letterman.  His observations on the government, the economy, and society are as timely now as when he first made them.  On his political affiliations: "I'm not a member of any organized political party.  I'm a Democrat."  Of the Stock Market Crash: "If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?"  Famous for the statement, "I never met a man I didn't like," Will Rogers is the quintessential image of the common man.
